چکیده

A 2-month old girl was transferred from General Hos pital Kurunegala to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH) in September 1998 with a history of uncontrolled generalised fits from the age of 6 weeks. Before 6 weeks the baby-had been apparently normal. She is a product of a first cousin marriage. The other two children are in good health. The birth and neonatal histories were normal. The birth weight was 3.65 kg. The baby was treated with phenobarbitone at the Kurunegala Hospital with little effect. She was suck ing wel l t h roughou t . A l u m b a r punc tu r e d o n e at the Kurunegala Hospital revealed a normal CSF.

Familial Hypomagnesemia with Secondary Hypocalcemia Mimicking Neurodegenerative Disorder.

BACKGROUND Familial hypomagnesemia with secondary hypocalcemia is a genetic disorder of magnesium metabolism that presents with refractory seizures in infancy. CASE CHARACTERISTICS We herein report an infant with familial hypomagnesemia who presented as medically-refractory seizures and had cerebral atrophy on neuroimaging. Interestingly he had lost previous two siblings because of lack of co...

Suppression of Parathyroid Hormone in a Patient with Severe Magnesium Depletion

Hypomagnesemia is often associated with coexisting electrolyte abnormalities like hypokalemia and hypocalcemia. Hypocalcemia has been shown to be secondary to hypoparathyroidism induced by hypomagnesemia. Here, we discuss a case of a patient with severe hypomagnesemia and associated hypocalcemia. A 38-year-old lady was admitted to the hospital for weakness of lower extremities and an eventual f...

Inherited disorders of renal magnesium handling.

The genetic basis and cellular defects of a number of primary magnesium wasting diseases have been elucidated over the past decade. This review correlates the clinical pathophysiology with the primary defect and secondary changes in cellular electrolyte transport. The described disorders include (1) hypomagnesemia with secondary hypocalcemia, an earlyonset, autosomal-recessive disease segregati...

Hypomagnesemia and functional hypoparathyroidism due to novel mutations in the Mg-channel TRPM6

Primary hypomagnesemia with secondary hypocalcemia (HSH) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by neuromuscular symptoms in infancy due to extremely low levels of serum magnesium and moderate to severe hypocalcemia. Homozygous mutations in the magnesium transporter gene transient receptor potential cation channel member 6 (TRPM6) cause the disease. HSH can be misdiagnosed as primary ...

Novel TRPM6 mutations in 21 families with primary hypomagnesemia and secondary hypocalcemia.

Primary hypomagnesemia with secondary hypocalcemia is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by profound hypomagnesemia associated with hypocalcemia. Pathophysiology is related to impaired intestinal absorption of magnesium accompanied by renal magnesium wasting as a result of a reabsorption defect in the distal convoluted tubule. Recently, mutations in the TRPM6 gene coding for TRPM...
